Photography - 1st Florida Clients

Little known fact- as I am a professional freelance media makeup artist (versed in hair design, too)...I am also a professional photographer. I do some freelance work on the side, but I've worked, for the most part, for 1 Fine Day Photography, and apprenticed with Jen Wheeler of Serendipity Photo & 1 Fine Day Photography and still shoot for her. This is a nice forum for my freelance clients to see their images up (besides on facebook). Since I have been concentrating on building my freelance makeup business the past couple of years, I have not marketed my photography services very aggressively, but would like to share what is definitely a passion within my professions.

You will see more of my photography slideshows and work to come...

Here's to my first Florida photography clients!
Christine and Thomas are a phenomenal couple and there is a slideshow here of their engagement session I shot earlier this month at the lovely Hollis Gardens in Lakeland, Florida. I will be shooting their wedding in June (can't wait!).
They are gorgeous, gracious, and so, so in love. :)

Cheers,

Brett

Spring Brides - Before & After

I always highly recommend having brides book a trial-run for their bridal hair and makeup. It's a very special time for me to design your look and for us to build up our relationship and repertoire before the big day. You just need to enjoy the morning of your wedding with your girls (which is why you have me as an on-site artist), so having gone through the experience of a trial-run, you already know what to expect and what my extensive steps in styling are all about (no fail- I always, ALWAYS, end up narrating and educating throughout the trial-run...which is a bonus). Plus you're 100% excited about the perfect bridal look that was design specifically for you.

These brides are two of my spring MN brides. For the convenience of my clients while I'm in advanced training out of state, I am flying myself back for every trial run and wedding weekend in MN. What can I say? There was really no question about it when school out of state came up. :)

I love my brides and am very happy to be embarking on the '10 season...inquire for '11...booking steadily for popular dates.

Cheers,

Brett

The Mad Hatter - Hee-Hee-Hoo!

And now for something completely different...I'm new at this type of character makeup, but we were able to see the new "Alice in Wonderland" and then create a replication of a character from the film. This was tons of fun (note my model- one Mr. Dorrian)!

Enjoy thoroughly!

Cheers,

Brett

Airbrush Accenting

Airbrush accenting can be an immediate and lovely way to compliment a beauty makeup application. It errs in the side of fashion makeup; however, there are plenty of ways to have airbrush makeup boost an event look. Airbrush is a great way to add luminance and bronzed tones to the shape of the face and body. Just a subtle hint of something extra special.

Cheers,

Brett

Fantasy Fashion - Multi-Medium Creations

Imagination, technical skill, and ultimate artistry have to convene in order to successfully execute a fashion fantasy look. It must still be beautiful while it is unique and of another realm/world. It's quiet acceptance is necessary to convey the feeling behind it. As an artist, I have to feel my way through the creative process to let vibes guide me to such stylized looks. Creams and airbrush combined to create these looks.

Brett

Vintage Glamour...Why I Can't Get Enough

Vintage Glam...May just be one of the most perfect styles. It's classic, yet can have a modern twist. It pulls out a genuine beauty and sex appeal from every woman when they step into those shoes with their style. My model was a seemingly run of the mill, pretty young woman (as you can see in the before picture); however, once I began sculpting the 1940's to her structure, a whole new essence began to appear. Feminine qualities of simple, honest beauty emerge when painted as a vintage beauty. And (of course), period makeup does not come to life until vintage hair is added into the mix.

This look is appropriate for events, stylized bridal looks, boudoir sessions and more...I think you need to get your glam on today! (Shameless plug: personal styling lessons are available).

Cheers,

Brett

A Few Good Beauties

We started out some of the Masters II training with some good old beauty work.

Body Painting- Human Statue

In my Masters II program for advanced makeup training, we recently did a group body painting project to turn a classmate into a statue. I helped stipple on the gray base, did much of the highlights and shadows in the vines on the chest and back to make them look 3-D, and worked on the cracks in the "stone." It was a very fun project. Who's up for a photo shoot of human statues sometime? :)

2009 MN Bride Magazine Article

I recently wrote an article for MN Bride Magazine entitled, "Red Carpet Makeup by a Media Makeup Artist" in order to shed some light on what we makeup artists provide to clients outside of the normal salon or DIY styling options. Click on the title of this blog entry to view the whole article. Enjoy!

Masters II Makeup Training- Joe Blasco

I was given a scholarship to attend Joe Blasco's East Campus in Orlando, FL for 8 months to receive a Masters II Diploma. Masters II is an 800-Hour program covering everything from beauty, airbrushing, character, and wigs/beards, to injuries, advanced prosthetics, monsters, sculpture and more. We are also learning additional aspects of the industry such as cosmetics chemistry, how to be a Dept. Head on a film (budgeting, hiring, and spreadsheets galore!), and the business of freelancing. There will be more as we go along, as well. The program is designed to be a unique apprenticeship experience, studying under multiple masters in the industry. So far, I have been lucky enough to study under Dyana Aives for beauty and airbrushing and Kim Greene for Dept. Heading and the business of films.

I have been in FL for almost 2 months. My program spans from February 1st-September 22nd, 2010. I have a handful of wedding and photo shoot clients I'm flying back and forth for in the '10 season, and have been lucky enough to network in FL for some makeup/hair and photography clients. It's super difficult to be away from home, but The Dorrian is a phenomenal support and I couldn't do any of this without him. I'm glad we both believe in following dreams. :)

More details to come...

Cheers,

Brett

Hello, folks-

I've officially drank the proverbial Kool Aid of embarking on being a blogger. I am still formulating what this will look like...but so far I know that the blog will be a place to post news about Brett Dorrian Artistry (awards, publications, etc.), a place to share my journey of obtaining a Masters II training for most of 2010, and to share tips and tricks for makeup and hair. Suggestions are welcome. Enjoy the ride! :)
