Sun Protection Tips - Ask the Expert: Sabrina

Summer is upon us and sunburn is everywhere. What is the best way to protect ourselves and how often should we reapply? Considering I am a big advocate for organic airbrush tanning these questions cross my mind often! I have come to find that we are slightly off the mark with our protection and products.

Here are a few tips for better sun protection:

1. We need to be applying a thicker layer of sunscreen—about two tablespoons for our bodies and 1/2 teaspoon for our face every two hours. Sunscreen does not last all day and needs to be reapplied often.

2. Wearing cosmetics with SPF is not enough. Although they are helpful, they are secondary to actual sunscreen. We should be using sunscreen daily because about 80% of our sun exposure is accidental. It happens because we think that sunscreen isn’t necessary for short outdoor activities, such as when we walk the dog or get the mail on our daily outings.

3. We need to make sure that we are buying a broad-spectrum UVA and UVB sunscreen so that we are protected against all of the suns harmful rays year round, especially your driving arm that sits by the window for hours in all seasons.

Get Gorgeous Legs in Minutes - Ask the Expert: Jamie

Alright ladies, it's summertime and most of us will be showing off our legs at one point or another, so I wanted to share an article on how to create legs that look smoldering hot by using skin care techniques and makeup.

Scandalously Sexy Legs
Prep for this look by using a scrub to slough off the dry skin, which can clog your razor and prevent a close shave.

  1. Use a short-and-stout kabuki makeup brush to apply shave cream in circles. It mimics what barbers use to shave men’s faces, propping up hairs for a crisper cut.
  2. Shave legs in sections: front lower, front upper, back lower, back upper. Rinse the razor after every third swipe to keep it from clogging.
  3. Dry off and apply body bronzer (like St. Tropez One Night Only Instant Glow Body Lotion, $18) to legs. Add an extra layer to inner and outer zones to create a long, lean illusion.
  4. Finish with a few drops of body oil (like Fresh Sugar Body Oil, $45) down the center of your legs. The vertical sheen elongates the look of the legs even more.
(Excerpted from Cosmopolitan Magazine, June 2012, Scandalously Sexy Legs, featuring NYC dermatologist Dendy Engelman.)

I like to use Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs ($12.50) for the leg bronzer.  It comes in different shades, so you could get a bronzer that is a few shades darker for the outer areas.

I hope these tips will help you proudly show off your gams the next time you wear that mini!

Easy Summertime Makeup - Ask the Expert: Sarah

It’s summer – the time of year for glowing skin with minimal effort.  Let’s keep your makeup routine quick and easy.  My favorite thing for the season is tinted moisturizer. It’s easy to blend in and usually has a nice SPF, plus it’s a great way to achieve a quick and effortless glow.

My favorite tinted moisturizers are:

  • Bobbi Brown Extra Tinted Moisturizing Balm – I love this one because I have VERY dry skin, so the extra hydration is perfect. This also offers great coverage. And I LOVE that it has SPF 25 since I’m a bit on the fair side. ($52)
  • Clinique Moisture Surge – Great if you have oily skin, which is known to happen this time of year! It’s oil-free and has decent coverage; it also leaves the skin a little more matte than usual so you don’t have excess shine.  ($27)
  • Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer – Has SPF 20 and an antioxidant vitamin complex that totally takes care of and protects your skin while you wear it. This one has nice even coverage that looks quite natural. ($42)

Wear your tinted moisturizer with a bright lip and mascara for a simple summer daytime look!
